Have you considered Marketing your business district? Advertising your business district in the local newspaper spreads the cost of advertising across many businesses and offers an opportunity to stretch restricted marketing dollars.
Startups and small businesses often have little available to spend on the kind of constant marketing needed to bring themselves to the attention of the public.

APNBA Grant Projects!
Public Safety is becoming an increasingly expensive cost of doing business for the many business districts plagued with graffiti, litter, vandalism, and panhandlers that give the public the mistaken notion that the district is not safe or a good place to shop.

The APNBA board agreed that the presence of graffiti cost them time and money and gave the perception that their district was crime-ridden and possible unsafe. After graffiti they said that vandalism, trash, litter, and car prowls, the homeless, panhandlers, drug dealers, and shop lifters adversely affected their customers.

Is it a Parasite, worm or Trojan-Horse? If your computer begins to do things out of the ordinary, or if it stops being able to do things it has always done in the past, it may be infected by a virus, sometimes called parasite, worm, or Trojan-Horse.

‘Parasite’ is a term for “unsolicited commercial software” — that is, a program that gets installed on your computer that you didn't ask for and which does something you probably don’t want it to, for someone else’s profit.

Marketing
The advantages to group marketing include branding your district, regularly reinforcing your marketing message, and attracting new businesses. The steps are simple, accomplishing them takes time and dedication.
  • Negotiate a rate in your local paper for the year,
  • Convince businesses to pay a monthly fee for a year,
  • Create a series of ads advertising the district and its businesses. (Most papers are happy to help).
Branding your district attracts business. When your district becomes a draw in itself, all the businesses gain. Think about the advantages of being on Hawthorne, Nob Hill, Alberta or the Pearl and start planning. It's a sure winner!

Public Safety
The police are funded through the city while the county funds the sheriff, district attorneys and jail staff. Portland and Multnomah County need to cooperate and provide a solution.

Every BDA president and delegate will receive a packet containing the Board's proposal, a sample letter, and a list of names, addresses, and emails for the elected leaders of both the city and county. The Executive Committee urges all of you to write to leaders of both governments, expressing the problems your district faces and telling them what you expect.

Parasite, worm or Virus
A computer virus (worm) is a infectious program that plants instructions in other programs to attack, scramble, or erase computer data. Viruses can replicate themselves and spread from system to system. A Trojan Horse, like the original, comes in looking like something harmless but the attacker gains some control of the victim's machine. Any time spent on the Internet is an opportunity for hackers (the graffiti vandals of the ether) to infect your computer.

Don Wells of Fix My Dead PC recommends purchasing and installing antivirus software like Norton's Antivirus and the antiparisite programs Spybot and Adaware, both free and available on the Internet or through
www.fixmydeadpc.com.

If the computer is infected, take it to a repair shop that can clean out the bugs. Don says he erased a record 2300 parasites and 19 viruses on one machine. He marvels that the computer still functioned.
