APNBA's Grant program has completed ten very successful years. Since its inception in 1995, 30 business districts have been granted just over $250,000 and provided nearly $650,000 in goods and services.

The 70 grants were awarded in a roughly equal ratio of marketing and improvement projects. Marketing included banners, gateway signs, sign caps, and lighting equipment. Improvements included flower baskets, murals, trash cans, benches, and kiosks. Most of the remaining grants went to commercial street trees, landscaping and greenscaping.

Some notable exceptions include the Hillsdale's cow sculpture, Central Eastside's skateboard park, and Greater Brooklyn's shared parking signs.

The APNBA believes that the 90% participation rate by business districts and the 2 1/2 to 1 ratio of matching funds to grant funds indicates the program meets both a need to improve the districts and a need to work in community for the community. The 2005 grants will be awarded at the January 24th Quarterly meeting.

Commissioner Sam Adams is requesting Work Plans from each of the active Business District Associations. He plans to have the various agencies list their engineering projects for the coming year so the BDAs and agencies know what will be happening in the districts.

Sam offers this solution to the number of small business leaders who told him that they needed sufficient notice to make survival plans before facing lengthy street construction, traffic diversions, and bridge closures.

Here's a chance to Show Off what your district has been doing to promote itself. Information about how you successfully managed an APNBA grant project or an event would be a tremendous help to other districts thinking along the same lines. Even the lessons learned (in other words, don't try this one) can be useful.

If you have a story, contact us at info@apnba.com. Keep in mind that "a picture is worth a thousand words," and send pictures as jpg or gif along with a brief note naming the event or grant and the year.
