Granted - It's a success
It is astonishing how much difference it makes to know you can pay your bills. After the Division/Clinton Business Association (D/CBA) received a $3500 grant to market the July 23rd street fair, we had the confidence to :
  • persuade Think Local First to profile four Division business members in their Willamette Week advertisement.
  • create and print 4,000 announcements for Division Hardware to insert in their advertising fliers.
  • convince the Oregonian to add the fair to their In Brief section.
  • insert advertisements in the Mercury, and the Oregonian's InPortland and A&E.
  • send the information to all the parent/child publications.
  • put up banners and appear on TV.
  • hang eye-catching posters in every business that accepts posting in their windows.
  • send notes home with local school children.
Having money is great. We rented tents, a dunk tank, and a stage. We hired a marching band, face painters, entertainers, and pedi-cab. We purchased all-day bus tickets so visitors didn't need to drive up and down. We will admit that some credit goes to the weather and to all the businesses that planted street trees. It was a warm, sunny day, with a faint breeze and pockets of shade everywhere.

The fair was a great success. Businesses reported between 30 - 75% more customers than their usual Saturday or previous fairs. Reports from businesses stated:
  • We had the busiest day we've ever had in 4 1/2 years of being open.
  • We had a terrific day business wise.
  • Not only did we have a successful day but the next day was cram full of customers and all new ones from word of mouth from the fair.
  • We had a much better day than expected; about 75% above normal. The parade helped early afternoon business, too.
Next year, when it's time to find sponsors, we'll remind the businesses what our event can do for their success. A successful Business Association event promotes successful businesses.

Crime Mapping
If you want to know about the public safety in your business district, you can get a clear picture using CrimeMapper, a powerful, yet easy to use, crime mapping tool that creates maps of reported Part I Crimes that have occurred within the City of Portland.

Simply enter an address or street intersection and CrimeMapper creates a twelve-month crime summary map, and an individual map for each Part I crime (view Crime Definition) that occurred within a half mile of that address or intersection.

By using the "Explorer" link in the CrimeMapper menu bar, you can zoom in or out, pan to other locations within the city, or print full page maps.

PDC Speakers
The PDC Speakers Bureau offers to bring a stimulating, fact-filled and relevant subject to life. Topics include PDC’s Vision for the Future, PDC Yesterday and Tomorrow, and PDC’s Housing and Economic Development programs.
