Grant Awards
2007 grant winners The annual Grants Awards dinner is scheduled for January 28, 2008 at Steamers Restaurant, 82nd and Sandy, from 6:00 - 9:00pm. David Ashton will entertain with a show of images taken at 2007 festivals, parades, farmer's gardens and other events. We are hoping to have Commissioner Adams present the checks and to hear a brief explanation of the new 990-N form that all non-profits with incomes below $25,000 will have to fill out this year. More details will be available soon.

APNBA Office
The APNBA's office still has a slanted floor and no lighting other than the atrium roof, three stories above. Move in date has been extended to February 1, 2008. We've purchased the furniture, tables, chairs, and file cabinets and Galadriel has a spreadsheet of all the accouterments needed - paperclips, pens, paper, coffee filters, etc. The APNBA plans to have a gala open house when we're finally settled.

Executive Director
Since the office won't be ready for occupancy until February, the committee to hire an Executive Director took the holidays off. The original 14 applicants have been winnowed to seven and interviews will be scheduled after the first of the year.

APNBA Logo
Did you notice the new APNBA logo at the top of the page? Teresa Ruch, of Teresa Ruch Designs, adapted the logo to the web. It was originally a pencil sketch that we scanned and digitized. Teresa's adaptations provide a sharper image both in print and on the web.

Managing Change
Galadriel Breezy Galadriel Breezy is a very organized person. She started working with the APNBA in May, collecting, collating, organizing, and documenting the papers, reports, grants, letters, and general miscellany the various leaders of the APNBA have amassed over the past 20 years. Part of that process has been reminding the BDA leaders of overdue grant evaluation forms and other missing documents.

When the project was nearing completion, she started taking over the details of creating and furnishing the new office, as well as staffing the Executive Director's hiring committee. Her current position doesn't have a title or description - she does whatever is necessary to help the APNBA settle into a brand new office with a new Executive Director, new furniture, and a new future.

Galadriel brings both organization and artistry to the APNBA. Her business background includes experience as legal, administrative, and executive assistants, as well as bookkeeping and Power Point presentations. She's also a fiber artist of considerable note, currently weaving a six-panel tapestry, each panel 16 inches wide and between 6 and 7 feet high. Her next project, scheduled for spring, will be a series of six small tapestries from line drawings.

When Galadriel toured the empty office space, her first thought was to collect BDA banners and use them to decorate the office, perhaps along with posters of earlier events. If you have some to contribute, contact Galadriel at

Safe Streets - Green Streets
Commissioner Adams intends to bring the Safe Streets plan to the City Council on January 9th for public comment. It will be voted on two weeks later, January 23rd. This plan will raise the funds needed not only to repair the badly worn commercial streets, but also to add pedestrian and bike amenities.

As currently proposed, all residents will pay a small fee, in the area of $5.00 a month through their water bills. All businesses, including churches and hospitals, will pay a monthly fee dependent on their size in square feet and the number of trips they generate.

Check out the proposed cost for your business by using the trip generation fees calculator/link. All small businesses should know what is being proposed as their part. There will be a simple process for disputing the size of your fee.
