Business vitality Grants
The APNBA is inviting business associations, business district associations, small chambers of commerce, and non-profits with a business-related project to apply for their Vitality grant. The maximum grant is $4000 and must be matched with cash, volunteer time and in-kind donations. Grant requests must show how the project will improve business vitality or capacity. A copy of the
grant request is available as a Word document. The required orientation will be held Monday, March 10, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Friendship Lodge, 57th and NE Sandy.

The APNBA offers free technical assistance to grant seekers.
Executive Director Jon Turino
Jon Turino, former vice president of the APNBA has accepted the position of Executive Director, beginning March 1, 2008.

Jon offers a wealth of experience in business and business association management. He has been active in many civic organizations and has served on the boards of the Gateway and Parkrose groups in addition to running a successful insurance and financial services agency.

Jon will be assisted by Galadriel Breezy as administrative coordinator and Alema McCrea as part-time bookkeeper. With a new office and staff, the APNBA plans to achieve its mission - to make business district associations, and the businesses that make up their membership, even more successful.

It all begins March 1
Saturday, March 1, the first file cabinets move into the new office at 107 SE Washington, Suite 244. The following Monday the furniture is delivered, and by Friday, the computers, supplies, coffee machine and all the other necessary supplies should be in place.

Our Open House is March 28th from 4:00 - 6:30. Come tour the office, meet our new Executive Director and Administrative Coordinator, and enjoy the amenities of the building.

Creative Grant Projects
Three imaginative projects to improve business districts are the Belmont Street bike corrals, the Multnomah Village park, and the Parkrose art project. All are examples of cooperation between neighbors, businesses, and government.

Belmont area Business Association, working with the neighbors, businesses, and the Portland Office of Transportation (PDOT), has created two bike corrals on SE Belmont Street, replacing on street parking, with the business owner's permission. The corrals are marked with bright yellow bollards and can contain bike racks to house about a dozen bikes each. The new corrals have removed the congestion on the sidewalks, where bikes used to be locked to traffic signs, trees, and any other stable object.

Multnomah Village Business Association, working with their neighborhood association, the Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) and the Office of transportation, is creating a pocket park on a section of unused land under the highway overpass. Working together, the group has replaced the unsafe stairs, removed blackberries, planted trees and shrubs, and created a small, safe, green space open to the entire area.

Parkrose Business Association, working with the Parkrose foundation, and both city and state offices of transportation, has redeveloped a traffic island. The small triangle has been cleared and replanted. In the spring a concrete platform will be added to host a revolving series of original art works available from the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC). The triangle sits at the intersection of two major city streets and runs alongside the freeway.

Annual Meeting and Elections
April 28th is the annual meeting and elections of the board. Please remember to decide who will represent you on the APNBA's Board of Directors. With increased funding, a full-time Executive director, an office, and staff, we look forward to a busy year.
