Business Vitality Grants must be postmarked by
March 31, 2008.
Open House
The APNBA Board cordially invites you to our Open House, March 28, 2008 from 4:00 - 6:30 pm, to meet Executive Director Jon Turino, admire the new offices, and help celebrate our belated coming-of-age.
The APNBA started in 1986 when nine existing business district organizations joined their "strength in numbers" and petitioned the City for funds to operate a city-wide volunteer organization whose purpose was to support the business district associations, who support the businesses in all of Portland's neighborhood commercial streets, town centers, and industrial districts.
The recent grant from the City will allow the APNBA to assist the emerging districts created by the City's increasing density and growth into East County. We look forward to an active and expanding APNBA.
PDC Storefront Grants
The Portland Development Commission's Storefront Improvement Program is available in targeted neighborhoods citywide, thanks to a new allocation of $550,000 from the city's general fund for fiscal year 2007-08. Eligible areas include Central Eastside, Dekum, Downtown Waterfront, Gateway, Interstate, Lents Town Center, Oregon Convention Center, Parkrose, River District and the South Park Blocks.
Funding is first come, first served for businesses in the designated areas. Program guidelines and application information are available at www.pdc.us/storefront or by calling 503-823-3312.
The Storefront Improvement Program provides matching cash grants and design assistance to businesses and property owners in eligible neighborhoods. The funds are targeted for exterior improvements ranging from repainting to new windows, lighting and signage. The improvements help businesses attract customers, create a safer street environment for the community and enhance the appearance of neighborhood commercial areas.
Call for Speakers!
Is your Business Association a winner? Will you share the secrets of your success with others?
The APNBA is organizing a half-day conference in early June, 2008 – exact date and location to be determined – and we want you to brag about what your organization is doing right in the areas of:
- Building and retaining membership
- Holding meetings that people love to come to
- Organizing events for the community
- Sponsoring civic projects
- Fund raising for charitable purposes
- Board member/officer recruitment
- Leadership succession planning
- Newsletter development
- Directory/Map/Calendar projects

Or any other topic you’d like to share with your fellow business district association members.
Each speaker will have 20 minutes to make a presentation and 5-10 minutes of questions and answers. Help in preparing the presentations for the Proceedings booklet will be available through APNBA resources. If you can jot down your talking points, we can help you make a great presentation.
Speaker selection will be completed by April 30th and you’ll have until the end of May to put your presentation together for the June conference. So don’t be shy! Contact Jon Turino right away so that you become a star and extol the virtues of your association.
Annual Meeting and Elections
April 28th is the annual meeting and elections of the board. Remember to send Galadriel the name of your board candidate before April 15th.
Safe Streets - Green Streets
Because the economy isn't looking good, Commissioner Adams is reviewing the entire package, which may then be referred to voters in November. Check out the proposed cost for your business by using the trip generation fees calculator/link.
