APNBA Grand Re-Opening/Open House - Jon Turino, APNBA Executive Director
A grand time indeed was had by all who attended the opening of APNBA’s new office at 107 SE Washington Street, Suite 244, Portland, OR 97214. The event on March 28th was elegantly catered by Dalton’s Northwest catering and the 150+ people who came for the ribbon cutting enjoyed wines, microbrews and a variety of gourmet seafood, meats, cheeses, fruits and desserts in the lobby of the building as well as tours of the APNBA office. Dignitaries present included Mayoral candidates Sam Adams and Sho Dozono and several candidates for Portland City Council seats. The Portland Development Commission and the City of Portland Bureau of Planning were also well represented and a great many APNBA business district association members made time to stop by, wish the APNBA well as it embarks on a revitalized program of support for Portland’s neighborhood business associations and to enjoy the party. Our thanks go to the East Portland Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors for their help with the ribbon cutting.
Portland Plan
The City is hosting a meeting on Thursday, May 22, 2008 from 7:30 – 9:30 AM at the Ambridge Event Center, 300 NE Multnomah St (across from the Convention Center).
The purpose of this meeting is two-fold. The first is to walk everyone through the Plan's preliminary documents:
- Assessment Introduction
- Central Portland Plan Assessment
- Comprehensive Plan Assessment
- Periodic Review Evaluation
The second is to gather responses and comments on these documents as the Bureau of Planning scopes the Work Plan for the actual Portland Plan. For more information and to register for the meeting, contact Christine Appleberry at 503-823-9907. To read the documents, go to http://www.portlandonline.com/portlandplan/
Local Business - Michael Taylor, Parkrose BA President - Statistics from ILSR
There is good reason to support your local businesses. Not only do they offer variety, unique goods, and employment opportunity, they:
Support the Economy
Every $100 spent with a local firm leaves $68 in the local economy; $100 spent in a chain store leaves $43. For every square foot occupied by a local firm, the local economic impact is $179, versus $105 for a chain store. Dollars spent at an independent business deliver twice the economic impact of those spent at national chains.
Support the Community
Small firms give an average of more than two and a half times the amount per employee than do medium or large firms (small firms give $789 per employee, medium firms $172. and large firms $334).
Support Themselves
Wal-Mart has received more than $1 billion in economic development subsidies from state and local governments across the country. Taxpayers have helped finance not only Wal-Mart stores, but also the company's huge network of distribution centers, more than 90 percent of which have received subsidies.
While we can be friends with our "big box" neighbors, we should remember that the small, medium, and local businesses are the lifeblood of our communities. Next purchase, make it local! Make it count!
