Business District Association Grant
The APNBA is announcing the 2009 Business District Association Grants. Up to $5,000 is available to eligible and selected projects.

Grant funds must be matched at least 1:1 with other funds, volunteer time, and donated goods and services. A required orientation is set for December 8th at the Friendship Masonic Center, 57th and NE Sandy at 6:30PM.

This grant cycle is open to recognized business district associations only. Applications are available as BDA Grant.doc or in pdf format BDA Grant.pdf.
Sam and Small Business
This is our last month working with Commissioner Sam on the problems facing Portland's small businesses. On January 1, 2009, when he takes office as Portland's Mayor, his job changes and so does our relationship.

In the past four years, Sam left city hall to march in our parades, join our feasts, hand out grant checks, visit individual businesses, and ask our opinions. He opened his doors to us, celebrated our successes, and helped us deal with bureaucracy.

Inside city hall, he found the funds and council support for our capacity grant, gave us unlimited advice, advocated for more non-profit grant funds, got the Business License Fee reduced, and worked with Multnomah County to reduce their business tax. He supported the small business Bill of Rights, fixed any number of small snarls, tried to fix the transportation maintenance backlog, and did what was within his power to see we got the tools we needed to succeed.

As mayor, the scope of his duties and the number of people wanting something will increase greatly. It will be harder to reach him, scheduling will be months in advance, and he'll have less time to chat. Being mayor isn't what it used to be. Sam will officiate over our government while always considering how his actions will affect the burgeoning communities just outside our city limits. Like it or not, Portland is part of a rapidly growing metropolitan area and Sam will become a major player in its development.

We know he enjoys the parades and the feasts and the opportunities to chat so we'll just have to start asking earlier and condensing what we want to say when we meet him. While we wish him all the best in his new job, we will miss our easy connection to Commissioner Sam.

From the Desk of the Executive Director
Jon Turino Do any of you, like me, sometimes wonder where the year has gone? Life has been busy since we opened the APNBA office nine short months ago, and the time certainly seems to have flown by. I thought I’d take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support this past year and provide you with a brief update on APNBA’s activities in 2008.

We were able to support our member business district associations, and a fair number of other business oriented non-profit organizations, with two grant cycles during the year. We’re pleased to have been able to do so and even more pleased with the imagination and creativity that have characterized the projects for which the grants have been awarded. Not to mention the average 4:1 leverage our grant recipients have been able to achieve. Great work!

We had a highly successful BDA Conference in June and followed it with an equally well-received Marketing Workshop in September. Our thanks go out to all who helped make those programs so valuable to the participants. Planning has already begun for our 2009 education and training agenda. The weekly News Source has been revamped and the monthly Business Voice updated and expanded. The first large phase of the business data base validation project is almost complete and a contract has been signed for the makeover of the APNBA web site.

The APNBA also participated in the development and revision of a number of elements of City of Portland ordnances, code sections and administrative rules to make sure that our members’ voices were heard. So, in retrospect, I guess I do see where the time has gone. For a full report on our 2008 activities, you can click here for the 2008 Activity Report. I hope you all have a safe and happy remainder of the year and I look forward to serving your needs in the upcoming new one.

Graffiti Materials Sales
It's been a year since the Graffiti Materials Sales ordinance was passed and stores had to lock up certain items commonly used by vandals. Customers, how do you see it working? Retailers, how did or didn't the ordinance work in your stores?

Take a minute and send your impressions in to Marcia Dennis, Graffiti Abatement Coordinator, Office of Neighborhood Involvement, 1221 SW 4th Avenue, Room 110, Portland, OR 97204 or call her at 503.823.5860. She needs the information by December 2 to include in her report.

Thanks for your help.
